What is Sudoku?
Sudoku is the new number puzzle driving people around the country crazy. Also known as Number Place in the US it is deceptively simple, you can start a puzzle and find yourself still racking your brain a few hours later.
It is thought to have first appeared in New York in the 1970s by the specialist puzzle publisher Dell in its magazine Math Problems and Logic Puzzles. The puzzle was introduced in Japan by Nikoli in 1984, which coined the Sudoku name. It recently found its way over to the British press and has spread like wildfire with most dailys and weekend editions now running a Sudoku puzzle.
Sudoku really only has one rule: Every row, column and 3x3 box has to have the numbers 1-9. Sounds simple doesn't it. Think again.
A starting puzzle will have some numbers filled in to start you off and are usually graded Easy, Medium or Hard to give you an idea of the difficulty level. Easy should only take about 10 minutes to complete, Medium around a hour and Hard you may very well be struggling with the next day.
A properly formed Sudoku should only have one solution and be solvable by logic alone, that is you should never be made to guess to complete it. Until recently The Times set by Pappacom used to have our favourite but these have been overtaken by The Guardians hand crafted puzzles that we find to be a very enjoyable.
